Hartford can, and should, be a city where tenants expect their government to have their back when a landlord neglects their responsibilities; a city that values the lives and futures of its young people as much as their parents do; a city designed to make us all truly safe by finally prioritizing infrastructure, education, health, and housing.
Josh Michtom was elected to the Hartford City Council in November, 2019. Josh is an attorney at the Connecticut Office of the Chief Public Defender and a proud member of AFSCME Local 381. He also helped found the Hartford Deportation Defense Group (along with many activists). He was recognized in 2017 by the South Side Neighborhood Institute for his work raising money to acquire and repair musical instruments for Hartford Public Schools and in 2018 for volunteer work with families displaced by Hurricane Maria, which included translation, advocacy, and moving furniture. On City Council, he has championed tenants’ rights, police accountability, access to translation services, the needs of people experiencing homelessness, and smart budgeting that put the needs of families first. His writing on legal and community matters has appeared in the Hartford Courant, Slate.com, and the New York Times. He lives with his wife and children in Hartford’s Parkville neighborhood.
